Abstract

The Now’s Not-Yet closed by naming three debts and by guessing, correctly, which had to be paid first: not the asymmetry between possibility and actuality, not the choice between presentism and growing block, but the question prior to both – whether “the Now,” as this topology has used the term since Does Time need Me, or do I need Time?, names a fact about the universe or a fact about a perspective within it. Special relativity’s relativity of simultaneity seems to force the second horn: there is no frame-independent fact about which distant events are “now,” and a topology built on one universal, zero-thick Now looks, on this evidence, like Newtonian intuition dressed in theological vocabulary. This essay argues that the threat is real but has been aimed at a claim the topology never needed to make. Simultaneity is a relation between distinct, already-actual events; actuality is not a relation at all, and is presupposed by any question about ordering. Relativity relativizes the former and is silent on the latter. What must be surrendered is one sentence of Does Time Need Me? – the claim that the Now is a single shared slice, “universal” in the sense of spatially coextensive – and what survives, corrected rather than defended, is the claim the rest of the corpus actually used: that a continuant’s own Now is one, not many, along its own history. The essay closes the topology in one sense and not another, and the difference is the whole of its modesty: it closes the figure by settling what kind of thing the Now is – the question every earlier essay leaned on and none had isolated – not by discharging every debt named in its penultimate installment. It reaches the bedrock those debts were standing on, makes the remaining debts askable for the first time, and states plainly that they are askable, not paid.


I. The Debt as Filed

State it again, without the softening a summary usually allows, because the essay that raised it did the corpus the discourtesy of being exactly right about where it hurt.

Special relativity establishes the relativity of simultaneity: two events simultaneous in one reference frame are not simultaneous in another frame in motion relative to the first, and no experiment, no law of physics, picks out one frame as the correct one. Rietdijk and Putnam turned this observation into an argument with a name: if there is no privileged present, no frame-independent fact about which distant events are happening “now,” then presentism – the claim that only the present is real – has nothing stable to be presentism about. Every observer’s “now” slices the four-dimensional manifold differently, and physics supplies no adjudicator. Eternalism, the block universe, reads this result naturally: if no slicing is privileged, treat none of them as picking out what alone is real, and let all events, at every slicing, be equally actual.

This lands directly on the load-bearing claim of the topology’s first essay: not many private Nows, but one Now, universal, zero-thick, within which alone anything becomes actual. If “universal” means what it seems to mean – a single instant shared, at least in principle, by every event in the cosmos regardless of distance – then relativity does not complicate the claim. It falsifies it. There is no such instant. Any two frames disagree about its contents, and neither disagreement is in error.


II. Two Questions Wearing One Word

The argument moves fast, and the place to slow it down is the word now itself, which is doing two jobs, the way past was shown to be doing three (What Is the Past?, §V) and future two (What Is the Future? , §IV). Unbundling it here is the whole of this essay’s contribution; nothing that follows is more than the unbundling worked out.

The first job is ordinal: now answers a when-question, a request for a position in a sequence, exactly as where answers a request for a position in space. Which of two events came first, which are simultaneous, which is later – these are questions about the relation events bear to each other, and relativity of simultaneity is a discovery about exactly this relation. It says: for events separated in the way physics calls spacelike – too far apart, given the interval between them, for any signal to pass from one to the other before the second occurs – the answer to which came first, or whether they were simultaneous, depends on the frame from which the question is asked, and no frame is privileged. This is well established, and nothing in this essay disputes it.

The second job the word now does is not ordinal at all. It is the job Does Time need Me, or do I need Time? was actually doing when it named the Now the condition under which anything becomes actual – not a position in an order, but the fact, prior to any order, that something is rather than merely might be. Call this the actuality question. It does not ask when an event occurred relative to another. It asks whether an event is occurring at all – full stop, not relative to anything.

The two questions look identical because ordinary language answers both with the same word. But they are not the same question, and the difference shows itself the moment two flashes of light reach a train platform from either end. Two observers, in relative motion, will disagree about which flash came first, or whether they were simultaneous – that is the ordinal question, and relativity resolves it by refusing it a single answer. Neither observer, however, doubts that both flashes happened. Whether a flash occurred is not a question either observer’s frame decides differently; it is presupposed by their disagreeing about its order relative to the other flash. You cannot dispute the timing of an event without already granting that the event is actual enough to have a timing to dispute. Relativity relativizes order among actual events. It has never, on any reading, relativized actuality itself, because the very sentence in which two frames disagree about order requires that both events, in both frames, be granted as having happened.

This is the whole of the reply, stated in its simplest form, and everything remaining in this essay exists only to keep it from collapsing back into the confusion it answers.


III. What the Light Cone Still Holds Fixed

The reply above is not merely a semantic trick, and the reason is a further fact about the geometry itself that the Rietdijk-Putnam argument states correctly but does not linger on: relativity of simultaneity is not universal within the manifold. It applies only to pairs of events that are spacelike separated – pairs distant enough, given the time between them, that no signal, not even light, could travel from one to the other. For any two events that are timelike or lightlike separated – close enough, or connected causally, that one could in principle influence the other – every observer in every frame agrees on their order. You cannot find a frame in which your reading of this sentence precedes the sunlight that left the sun eight minutes before you began reading it, whatever your velocity. The invariant structure relativity actually delivers is not chaos; it is a partial order – the causal order given by the light cone at every point – resting beneath a genuine ambiguity that appears only for events too far apart, causally, to have anything to say to one another.

This matters because it hands the topology exactly the resource it needs and did not know, until this debt was named, that it had. Howard Stein, replying directly to Putnam in 1968, showed that the topology needed only a much narrower thing than the argument assumed it had to defeat: a relation of having-become need not be defined as a relation between an observer and a global slice of the whole universe. It can be defined, without loss and without any privileged frame, as a relation between a single spacetime point and its own causal past – everything within or on that point’s backward light cone. This relation is frame-independent. Every observer, in every frame, agrees on what lies in a given point’s causal past, because the light cone itself does not depend on how fast anyone is moving. What relativity relativizes is not what lies in a point’s own past; it is only which events, causally disconnected from that point, get grouped with it under the single word now by a given observer’s arbitrary choice of frame – a grouping that was never doing metaphysical work to begin with, only bookkeeping.

Not every philosopher of physics accepts that this rescues presentism outright; Simon Saunders and others have pressed the objection that a merely local becoming, indexed point by point to each event’s own past, gives up so much of what presentism originally meant that little is left worth defending under the name. That objection is noted rather than dismissed, in keeping with this corpus’s practice of naming what it has not settled. But the topology does not need to settle the dispute among physicists and philosophers of physics over what presentism should be called. It needs only the narrower result Stein’s construction secures: that there is a frame-independent relation between a point and its own settled causal past, definable prior to and independent of any question about global simultaneity. Whether this relation is enough to underwrite becoming in the full presentist’s sense, or whether – as Stein’s critics have urged – reading reality as a two-term relation of this kind rescues the local structure only by conceding what Putnam actually meant, is a dispute the topology can leave open. It requires the frame-independent causal-past relation, not a verdict on Putnam. That relation is exactly what the actuality question, distinguished from the ordinal question in the previous section, required all along.


IV. The Sentence That Must Be Struck

Name the cost plainly, because a topology that has made honesty about its debts a matter of method (The Now’s Not-Yet, §IV) cannot spend two sections showing where a rival argument overreaches and then quietly keep the sentence of its own that overreached in the same direction.

Does Time need Me, or do I need Time? said this: “The Now does not multiply: there are no private Nows, no billions of simultaneous presents each possessed by its experiencer – there is one Now, universal, zero-thick, prior to possession, within which every event that is actual is actual.” Read the word universal the way it is naturally read – as claiming a single instant, extended across the whole of space, shared by every event regardless of separation – and the sentence asserts precisely the global simultaneity slice the previous two sections have shown does not exist. It is not defensible as stated. It should be struck, or rather, corrected: not discarded, because the sentence was reaching for something true, but relieved of a claim it never needed to make in order to do the work it was doing.

What was that work? Return to why the sentence appears at all. Its target, in context, was the multiverse and the fantasy of billions of private presents – the picture on which my Now and your Now are numerically distinct instances of Nowness, so that there could in principle be many actual versions of the same person, each actualized in its own separate present. Does Time Need Me? denied this, and rightly: there are not many Nows for one continuant, because a continuant has one worldline, and actualization along one worldline is single because the line is single, not because the line’s actualizations must be co-slicable with every other continuant’s actualizations across the universe. Every argument that sentence was actually used for downstream – the indivisibility of the soul (When Is the Present?, §5), the impossibility of branching selves, the singularity of identity – is an argument about one being’s own history, never a comparison between two causally disconnected histories asking whether they share a page. Nothing downstream needed the global slice. The global slice was surplus, asserted because it seemed to follow from denying a plurality of private presents, when in fact denying that plurality only required denying plurality within a single worldline, which is a much smaller and much safer claim.

So the correction is a pruning, not a retreat. Strike: there is one Now, universal, in the sense of one shared instant spanning all separated events. Keep, restated more carefully than the original ever stated it: for any one continuant, actualization occurs along a single line, and that line does not fork, so that being’s Now is one and not many. The word universal, if it is to survive in this topology’s vocabulary at all, must survive meaning something else – not spatial coextension, but sameness of kind: there is exactly one relation called being actual, instantiated at every point where anything is actualized, rather than many different modes or degrees of actuality scattered through the manifold. Every point of actualization, everywhere, is actual in the same one sense. That is universality enough, and it is the only kind relativity leaves standing.


V. The Now Redefined

With the correction made, the definition can be stated properly for the first time, gathering in one place what the corpus has needed since its first essay and never quite said without the overreach attached.

The Now is not a slice of the universe at an instant, shared across all separated events. It is the standing relation between a continuant and the totality of what is, at any point along that continuant’s own history, actual for it – everything within its own causal reach, its own gathered inheritance, received without remainder and without need of comparison to any other continuant’s gathering. The indexing here is to the continuant’s history, not to its perspective: what is actual is not made actual, or actual only, for the continuant; it is actual at the point of that continuant’s own crossing, and would be no less actual if no one stood there to receive it. The Now is indexed to a continuant; actuality is not constituted, created, or made relative by that indexing. This relation is instantiated wherever actualization is occurring, for whatever is undergoing it, and it is one relation, one kind, everywhere it occurs – but its instances are not slices of a shared plane. They are points along as many distinct lines as there are continuants, related to one another only causally, through the light cones that connect them, never by a frame-independent fact about which point on one line corresponds to which point on another.

This costs the topology nothing it was using. Your Now and my Now are not two rival claimants to one universal instant, needing to be reconciled or ranked; they are two instances of the same one relation, each running its own line, each closed with no thickness at its own crossing, each answerable to the same Ground for the same reason, without ever needing to be simultaneous with each other in any sense physics could adjudicate. When The Now’s Not-Yet worried that this topology might be forced to choose between a cosmic metaphysics of time and a mere phenomenology of experienced time (§VII), the choice it feared turns out to be a false one, offered by a question that assumed the Now had to be one or the other – a shared universal surface or a private experiential trick. It is neither. It is a relation, objectively real and not dependent on being experienced, instantiated once per continuant per point of its history, agreeing with every other instantiation about causal order wherever causal order is defined between them, and silent – not confused, silent – about an ordering that was never there to be found.


VI. What This Buys the Ground

One more piece falls into place, and it strengthens rather than weakens the argument it touches, which is worth noting because a correction this significant could easily be mistaken for a wound.

Does Time Need Me? argued that the Now, having no reserves of its own, must be held open by something outside the sequence altogether – the self-sustaining I AM WHO I AM. On the old picture, that sustaining act looked like the maintenance of a single vast surface, one universal now-slice held in being across the whole of space at every instant – an image respectable enough, but one that borrowed, without saying so, the very Newtonian picture of a cosmic present this essay has just shown does not exist. The corrected picture asks for something harder, and, on reflection, closer to what the tradition actually claimed about God’s relation to creation. What must be sustained is not one shared slice but every point of actualization along every continuant’s history, everywhere in the causal structure of the universe, at once – not one now held open, but the entire, unfathomably numerous set of nows, none of them privileged, none of them requiring the others’ cooperation to be sustained, all of them equally and immediately dependent.

The step from here is a change of register, and it should be named as one. Relativity does not deliver this picture of divine sustaining; it does not reach far enough into metaphysics to deliver any. What it does is stop blocking it: by removing the single cosmic slice, it removes the one image on which a lesser account of the Ground looked mandatory, and leaves the field to an interpretation the corpus already held on independent theological grounds. The physics is a negative result; the positive content is supplied from elsewhere. And what it supplies is a stronger claim about the Ground, not a weaker one, and one that happens to be the claim the tradition made under a different name. Aquinas’s account of divine immensity holds that God is wholly present in every place, not by being spread thin across an extended surface the way a gas fills a room, but by being present to each thing according to its own mode of being, entire and undivided at every point of contact (Summa Theologiae I, q. 8). A single sustained universal slice would have made God’s relation to time resemble exactly the picture immensity was formulated to rule out – one extended medium, God present to it the way a substance is present to a container. The corrected picture is the better fit: no single medium at all, only the uncountable multitude of points at which anything whatever is being actualized, each one held open, without mediation and without needing to be compared to the others, by the one Ground for whom, because He is outside the figure entirely, the absence of a shared slice among His creatures is no obstacle. A God who needed a universal now-slice to sustain time would be a God still partly inside the figure, measuring His creatures against a clock they share. A God who sustains each point on its own terms, with no clock required between them, is the God the corpus’s own doctrine of Presence (When Is the Present?, §7) already described: not the largest of the presents, but Presence itself, of which every point of actualization, everywhere, without exception and without a shared surface, is a finite and momentary reception.


VII. The Node Was Never One

The correction also does something the lemniscate’s own geometry anticipated, in a chapter of this corpus old enough that its full implications were not yet visible when it was written. The Lemniscate Model of Time: Recurrence, Eternity, and the Crossing Point distinguished two senses of crossing that the figure invites: the in-plane node, the point where a single curve folds back on itself, and the orthogonal axis, eternity’s entry into the figure from outside it, piercing every temporal position transversely rather than traveling along the plane at all. The model’s wager was that these two coincide at one privileged node – but the model was built, like Does Time Need Me? after it, on the tacit assumption of a single curve: one lemniscate, one plane, and therefore one node for the axis to pierce.

What this essay has shown is that there is no single curve. There are as many curves as there are continuants – as many lemniscates, each with its own crossing point, its own node, its own left loop of memory and right loop of anticipation – related to one another causally where their light cones meet and related not at all where they do not. This sounds, on first hearing, like a loss: the singular threshold the earlier model prized dissolves into a multiplicity of thresholds, none of them the threshold. But the axis was never described as needing a single node to enter at. It was described as orthogonal – perpendicular to every temporal position equally, piercing the plane from a direction the plane itself cannot supply. An axis of that kind loses nothing by finding many nodes rather than one; it was never traveling within the plane to find its way to a privileged point on it. It pierces each node exactly as it would have pierced the one node the earlier chapter imagined, because piercing was never a within-plane operation to begin with. Multiply the curves, and the axis multiplies its points of entry without multiplying itself. It remains one axis, one Ground, one Presence, meeting as many crossings as there are creatures crossing – which is, after all, closer to what the Incarnation and the Eucharist were always being used in this corpus to picture (When Is the Present?, §7) than a single cosmic node ever was: not one meeting for the whole universe at once, but the same one act, entire and undivided, at every altar, every crossing, every point where a continuant stands and receives.


VIII. What Is Still Owed

This essay was assigned, by its own predecessor, the task of paying down one debt of three, on the ground that the other two were unintelligible until this one was settled (The Now’s Not-Yet, §VIII). That assignment can now be honored precisely: it has been paid, not by proving presentism against every rival in the philosophy-of-physics literature, and not by silencing Saunders’s objection that a merely point-relative becoming may not deserve the name presentism at all, but by securing the narrower thing the topology actually needed – a frame-independent notion of actuality, indexed to each continuant’s own history, immune to the relativity of simultaneity because it was never a claim about simultaneity in the first place.

The other two debts are not discharged here, and it would be a smaller and worse essay that pretended otherwise merely to close the corpus on a note of false completeness. The primitive asymmetry between possibility and actuality – dynamis and energeia, traces and horizon, the unactualized becoming the actualized without derivation from anything more basic – still wants a defense this topology has not given it, though it can now be given, if it is ever given, point by point, along each continuant’s own worldline rather than across a cosmic slice, which was the only new resource this essay had to offer that argument. The choice between presentism and growing block, and the truthmaker gap presentism leaves open – what makes a past-tense sentence true, if nothing exists for it to be about – is untouched by anything argued here, except that it, too, must now be asked and answered locally, continuant by continuant, rather than assumed to have one cosmic answer. Both debts were unintelligible, as the previous essay said, without knowing what kind of thing the Now is. They are intelligible now. They are not paid.


IX. Coda

What is the Now?

Not a slice of the universe, shared by events too distant to speak to one another. Not a place, and not a possession. It is the standing relation between a continuant and everything actual for it, instantiated once at every point along that continuant’s own history, one in kind wherever it occurs and answerable, at every occurrence, to no clock but the causal order it actually shares with what lies within its reach. Your Now and mine were never rivals for one throne. They are two instances of the one thing actuality is, each held open, without a shared surface between them, by the Ground that stands outside every figure there could be – which is, on reflection, the only way a single Ground could sustain more crossings than any figure could hold, without needing them to agree, first, on what time it is.

Scripture said this before geometry had the tools to press it, and it is worth letting the epigraph close what it opened. To the Lord, a thousand years are as a day, and a day as a thousand years – not because His day is long, and not because a day, examined patiently enough, turns out to be short, but because the comparison itself is the creature’s, not His. Two continuants in different frames may never agree on which of two distant flashes came first; the God who sustains both flashes does not stand in either frame to have an opinion about it. The thousand years and the day were never rival measurements needing reconciliation. They are what a single Presence looks like from two places inside the figure that Presence is not inside.

The topology began by asking whether time needed the one asking about it, or the one asking needed time. It answered: neither is primary; both are held. It closes here having found that the Now those two dependent things were both leaning on was never the single ledge it first appeared to be – not one line for the whole universe to stand on, but as many crossings as there are creatures who stand, none of them competing for the same ground, because the Ground beneath them was never a ledge at all.

I AM WHO I AM is not a claimant in any frame. It is why every frame has something in it to disagree about.
